Throwback Tuesdays : Dalibhunga Mandella, 11 years on the team

Welcome to another Throwback Tuesday! Over the last month or two, we've seen Penny make a spectacular comeback in the jumping arena after a three-year hiatus, and it's sparked countless questions about the origins of her jumping journey. Today, we take a delightful detour down memory lane to revisit the legendary 'Dalibhunga Mandella,' a true icon in the world of showing and working hunter.

It was eleven years ago when a seven-year-old Penny first met Mandella, who was then on loan from the Nugent family. This incredible pony had been under their care since he was just a foal, and his journey had been nothing short of remarkable. At the time, Penny had been riding a different pony for a few months, but unfortunately, that experience had left her feeling somewhat disheartened. The pony had knocked Penny's confidence considerably, leading her to become hesitant about jumping and riding in general.

When Mandella arrived, he brought with him an air of promise and assurance. With his striking strawberry roan coat and broad white face, Mandella quickly captured the hearts of everyone around him. The pairing of the tender seven-year-old Penny and the seasoned fourteen-year-old Mandella was a sight to behold—endearing and full of potential. Mandella's strong and stocky build made him the perfect hunter pony, embodying strength and grace in equal measure. His kind and handsome face radiated warmth, making him not just a pony, but a true partner to young Penny.

From that moment on, Mandella became more than just a pony; he became a guardian of Penny's budding equestrian journey. With great patience and understanding, he carried her through the ups and downs of learning to ride; he treated her with the utmost care, as if she were a precious egg. In his company, Penny rediscovered her passion for riding and her confidence began to bloom once more. Under Mandella's watchful eye, she learned the art of riding, achieving a remarkable transformation from a tentative young rider to a budding equestrian with competitive aspirations.

From the ages of 7 to 13, Penny honed her skills on Mandella, tackling everything from basic flatwork to more advanced jumping techniques. Their bond grew stronger with each ride, creating a partnership built on trust and mutual respect. Mandella not only taught her how to ride but also instilled a sense of perseverance and determination that would serve her well beyond the confines of the riding ring.

Throughout their journey together, Mandella accomplished extraordinary feats. He achieved two prestigious Balmoral wins with the Hudsons Horses team—one with Penny and another with Charlotte, showcasing the versatility and talent he possessed. Additionally, he impressively secured a third-place finish at Dublin alongside Penny, marking a significant milestone in her competitive career. These achievements were testaments to the hard work and dedication both Penny and Mandella put into their training, solidifying their bond as a formidable team.

As we celebrate 11 years of Mandella being a cherished member of the Hudsons Horses team, it's heartwarming to reflect on the impact he has had on the lives of countless riders. Over the years, seven of our team’s riders have had the privilege to learn on Mandella, each one walking away with unforgettable memories and invaluable lessons. The connections forged between rider and pony have created a legacy that will resonate for years to come.

Today, we honor Mandella not only for his impressive achievements in the show ring but also for the profound role he has played in shaping the equestrian journeys of young riders like Penny. His gentle nature, strength, and pilot skills have not only helped Penny reclaim her confidence but also ignited the passion for riding in many others.

Happy 11th anniversary on the team, Mandella! Your presence in our lives has brought immeasurable joy and inspiration. Here’s to many more years of shared adventures, growth, and unforgettable moments!
