Why we have Himalayan Salt hanging in our stables - the Cure in Pure ( Episode 1 )

 Hey everyone!

We’ve received so much fantastic feedback about our 'Throwback Tuesday' blog posts that we’re excited to announce a new series: 'The Cure in Pure.' In this series, we’ll explore the natural options we choose for our horses and ponies here at the yard.

In this first installment of 'The Cure in Pure,' we’ll address a question we’ve been asked many times: Why do we have Himalayan salt licks hanging in our stables? We hope you enjoy this deep dive into our natural choices for our horses and ponies !

Himalayan salt has always been an essential addition to our stables, We love it for its numerous health benefits for horses. When left hanging in their stables, Himalayan salt serves not just as a source of essential minerals but also enhances the overall well-being of our equine friends.

Natural Mineral Supplement

Himalayan salt is renowned for its rich mineral content, containing over 80 trace minerals, including calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron. Horses require a balanced diet rich in these minerals for optimal health. While they receive some nutrients from their feed, providing a natural mineral source like Himalayan salt can help fill in the gaps. By allowing horses to lick the salt block at their own pace, they can better regulate their intake based on their individual needs, promoting mineral balance.

Encouragement of Hydration

Horses need to maintain proper hydration levels, especially after exercise or during hot weather. Himalayan salt encourages horses to drink more water, as they instinctively seek out the minerals they need. When hung in the stable, the salt serves as a reminder for horses to stay hydrated. Proper hydration is vital for digestion, circulation, and maintaining overall health, making Himalayan salt a helpful tool in ensuring your horse consumes enough water.

Improved Digestive Health

Adding Himalayan salt to the stable can also contribute to improved digestive health. The presence of minerals helps in the production of digestive enzymes and supports gut function. When horses lick the salt block, these minerals can positively impact their gut flora, leading to better digestion and absorption of nutrients. This can be particularly beneficial for horses prone to digestive issues, as maintaining a healthy gut is key to their overall health and performance.

Stress Relief and Comfort

Horses are sensitive creatures, often affected by their environment and daily routines. The presence of Himalayan salt can contribute to a calming atmosphere in the stable. The act of licking the salt block can be soothing, providing comfort and reducing stress. This is especially useful in high-pressure situations, such as competitions or during transportation. By creating a tranquil environment, horse owners can help their animals feel more secure and relaxed.

Natural Behaviour and Enrichment

Horses are natural foragers, and their instinct to search for food and mineral sources is vital for their mental well-being. Hanging a Himalayan salt block in the stable allows horses to engage in natural behaviour, promoting mental stimulation and preventing boredom. This enrichment helps keep horses occupied, reducing the likelihood of destructive habits, such as cribbing or stall walking.

Conclusion

Incorporating Himalayan salt into a horse's stable is a simple yet effective way to support their health and well-being. From providing essential minerals and encouraging hydration to promoting digestive health and reducing stress, the benefits of this natural supplement are numerous. By hanging a Himalayan salt block in the stable, your not just offering a tasty treat; they’re significantly contributing to the holistic care of your equine companions. As with any supplement, it's important to monitor your horse's intake and consult with a veterinarian to tailor the best care for your animal. Embrace the benefits of Himalayan salt, and watch your horse thrive!

NOTE: As seen in the picture our Himalayan salt lick is a medium sized Himalayan rock salt, piece of rope is put through the middle on the salt and threaded through the ring on the stable wall, This makes it easily accessible for our horses and easy to change for us ! Please ensure your salt is in a safe location in your horses or ponies stable.
