"Rug-Free and Carefree: Let Your Horses Be!" Our Teams Perspective - The Cure in Pure ( Episode 2 )
"Rug-Free and Carefree: Let Your Horses Be!" - Our teams perspective on Rug-less horses and why we chose to be rug free.
As a team, we often marvel at the beauty and grace of these magnificent creatures. Watching the horses roam freely, interact with their herd, and thrive in their natural environment is one of the greatest joys we get to experience in life. While we initially believed that providing blankets or rugs was necessary for their comfort, we've come to realize that allowing them to live rug-less can significantly enhance their overall well-being. In this document, we will share our thoughts on why going rug-less has been a transformative choice for the horses and how it can benefit yours too.Obviously horses cannot go rugless all the time and depending on their health etc rugs can be very necessary this really varies depending on the horse !
1. Enhanced Natural Behaviors
Horses are remarkable beings, designed by nature to be social and active. Since we’ve allowed the horses to forego rugs and graze in a herd or with a friend, we’ve witnessed some incredible changes in their behavior that reflect their true nature:
Grooming : Without a rug, we’ve noticed the horses engage in grooming with one another far more frequently. It’s heartwarming to see them strengthen their bonds through mutual grooming, which not only maintains healthy skin and coat but also provides them with comfort and companionship.
Social Interaction : the horses have become more communicative and playful, often initiating games with their herd mates. Observing them interact freely has reaffirmed our belief in the importance of social connections for their emotional health. They seem happier, more relaxed, and less anxious in their rug-less state.
Movement : we can see the difference in their stride and posture when they’re not encumbered by rugs. They move more freely, playing and exploring their surroundings with joyful abandon. This freedom not only keeps them physically fit but also reduces the likelihood of stiffness or discomfort.
2. Improved Coat Health
One of the most noticeable changes since I stopped using rugs on my horses has been in the health of their coats:
Natural Oils : Watching the horses roll in the dirt and interact more naturally has resulted in a shiny, healthy coat. The natural oils produced by their skin are allowed to flourish, and the difference is remarkable. We love running our hands over their sleek coats, feeling the health that comes from their ability to self-groom.This is also helped by feeding and using natural products and soaps on there skin.
Air Circulation : we no longer worry about dampness getting trapped against their skin. Instead, we know they benefit from fresh air circulating around them, which helps prevent skin irritations and keeps them comfortable. We find peace of mind in knowing their skin is healthy and they are less prone to infections or irritations.
Adaptation to Weather : the horses are incredible at adapting to the changing seasons. we’ve watched them grow thicker, insulated coats in winter, which they seem to take great pride in. Seeing them manage their body temperature so well reminds us why we love their resilience and adaptability.
3. Better Temperature Regulation
Before we made the switch to rug-less living, we often worried about the horses staying warm enough in winter or cool enough in the summer. Now, we see how well they regulate their own body temperature:
Thermoregulation : we’ve learned to trust their natural instincts. They know when to seek shade or when to huddle together for warmth. Watching them manage their body heat—growing a thick coat in winter or shedding it as summer approaches—has only deepened our respect for their natural abilities.
Avoiding Overheating : we’ve also noticed how much more comfortably they exercise without a bulky rug weighing them down. They seem to enjoy their workouts more, carefree and lively rather than sluggish or overheated. Knowing they can cool down effectively gives us peace of mind, especially during warmer days.
4. Reduced Risk of Injury
One of our biggest concerns as a team, is their safety, and we’ve found that going rug-less has significantly reduced the risks of certain injuries:
Chafing and rubs : we remember worrying about the potential for chafing from rugs, but since we’ve eliminated them, we’ve noticed fewer skin irritations and no more rubs from friction. It's reassuring to see their skin healthy and their coats gleaming.
-Getting Caught : With fewer items to snag on fences or equipment, we feel like we can relax more when they are playing and exploring. It’s a relief to let them have their freedom without the worry of rugs getting caught on something hazardous.
Limited Mobility : we’ve seen how much their range of movement has improved. Without the restrictions of a rug, they move with more fluidity and grace, which we find particularly rewarding to witness. Their overall physical well-being flourishes, and it makes our whole team feel so much pride.
5. Encouragement of Healthy Weight and Condition
The shift to a rug-less lifestyle has greatly impacted the horses' overall health and fitness:
Grazing Behavior : It is wonderful to see the horses enjoy unrestricted access to grazing. They spend their days happily munching on grass, which naturally promotes a balanced diet. Their delight in foraging leads to a stronger, healthier body—something we cherish deeply.
Active Lifestyle : With their ability to move freely, the horses are more inclined to trot and play. Their energy levels are noticeably higher, and we’ve found that they are happier with a more active lifestyle. The joy of watching them play and run freely reminds us of their wild ancestors.
6. Lower Environmental Impact
We have come to appreciate that our choices as horse owners can have broader implications for the planet. By allowing the horses to live rug-less, we feel like were making a more sustainable choice:
Sustainable Practices : Realizing that fewer resources are consumed in the production and care of rugs has motivated us to look for more sustainable options in our general horse care, helping us align our passion for horse care with our commitment to the environment.
Natural Materials : we’ve become more focused on using natural bedding and shelter materials, which not only benefits the horses but also ensures that we’re caring for the environment as well. This holistic approach has enriched our understanding of horse care and strengthened our bond with these beautiful animals.
Conclusion
While there may be instances when rugs are beneficial, our journey toward allowing the horses to live rug-less has been immensely positive. By embracing this change, we’ve witnessed the horses enhance their natural behaviors, improve their coat health, manage their body temperature effectively, reduce injury risks, and maintain a healthy weight—all while fostering a more sustainable lifestyle.
Every horse is unique, and the decision to go rug-less should take into account their individual needs. The joy we experience watching my horses flourish in a rug-less environment reminds us daily of our commitment to their natural well-being. We encourage fellow horse lovers to explore what rug-less living might mean for their own beloved equine companions—it could transform not only their lives but yours as well, this could mean being completely rugless in hot summer months or having a simple light fly sheet on it really depends on your horses need and your preferences !!!
